Lots of people want to go into their own business and there is a growing number that wants to own their own sex shop so we have som of the steps you need on how to start a sex shop. A sex shop can consist of a shop selling any number of sex items from lingerie to sex toys and beyond so this is a very generic article that should give you the basics. While you constantly hear that there’s money in sex there is a number of things that you need to get right in a real physical shop the first time as opposed to trial and error, this is because a real shop has so many more expenses.
Here’s a how to clip before you read the article!
How to start a Sex Shop
Step 1:Draw up a business plan for your new sex shop. It’s the single, most important step for a business. The business plan should include the name you’ve chosen for the business, the definition of the business, funding, plan of action, future vision, location and all pertinent research you’ve done regarding the industry and other local sex shop businesses.
Choose a name you can Advertise for instance “Bob’s Ass Licker” is not good but Sexy World Brisbane says it all.
Step 2: Apply for financing, unless you have the financial ability to fund your new sex shop. Your personal bank is a good place to start. Also, inquire about a business checking account and information for customer credit card use (merchant account).
Step 3: Look for a good location. Of course, you would want to avoid a location that already has a sex shop located close by. Look for a location in a mall or strip mall that already has shops adults would frequent, such as dress shops, spas, and hair salons, take away nightclubs and cinemas.
Step 4: Acquire licensing required to legally run your business. Check with city administration for this information. This will vary with different cities, counties, and states. However, you will probably need at least a business license, this is important because starting a sex shop can require lots of government and council interaction. Perhaps a quick letter asking instructions on how to start sex shop to your local government funded small business advisory.
Step 5: Set up wholesale accounts with adult sex shop suppliers and wholesalers. If you are in another country then go to your local wholesale expo, ie in the US visit AVN Novelty Expo they will have sales representatives that will help you with a combination of products to open your store. Stock some men’s sex toys, like prostate massagers and penis pumps. These are perfect for women to buy as gifts for men. You will also need shelving, fixtures, cash register, office supplies, office furniture and dressing rooms / viewing booths.
Step 6:Hire an accountant who’s happy to show you How to start a sex shop and is able to set up a proper accounting system, some that people use are cashflow manager , Xero , MYOB, QuickBooks. The accountant will do your income taxes and make sure that all other taxes are paid on time.
Step 7: Plan your store’s layout. It’s nice if the person manning the cash register is facing the front door, so she can greet customers as they enter. Changing rooms/ viewing booths should be to the rear of the store, for privacy.
Step 8 : Hire your staff. Make sure each hired employee has read your employee manual. This will assure that your sex shop is run to your specifications.
Step 9: Use your showcase, front windows as your best marketing tool. Place the most appealing garments in the window to lure new customers. Market your sex store through an Internet site and social networking. Stage demonstrations during your grand opening, offering coupons for discounts on that day.
Step 10: Watch Your cash flow.

hi there I am wanting to open a sex shop for more couples, and more of a gift store can you guide me in any way ??
Site Administrator says
Good question sorry for the late reply. If you are looking at a couples orientated sex shop you will need to focus on different aspects of the business for instance for couples (traditional male and female) you need to focus more on the female partner. From our experience a happy female generally makes a happy couple.
Couples Orientated Sex Shop
1. Lingerie
2. Lubes
3. Massage oils and associated equipment
4. Lots of vibrators and sex toys
5. How to dvds / mags (although the internet is slowly killing these items)
6. Libido enhancement products
7. Advice and information
Any more suggestions we will add.

Hello I have a adult website called Fire & Desire (fire-desire.com) and it is not getting a lot of traffic and when it does I’m not getting visitors who actually purchase I really want the website to make money so I can host parties close to the style of passion parties for my company and eventually open a adult boutique in Atlanta where I’m based with the hopes of having my own line of sex toys and lubes with all of my aspirations nothing can happen if I can’t get my website to make a profit! My question is what are some of the things I can do to get more of a buzz for my website especially with so many other websites out there that have sex toys and dvds.
Site Administrator says
Hi Dede thanks for the question if you want your website to get business then you will have to get proactive, you can’t just rely on pricing and matching your competitors you have to get your name out there. Basically you need to up your game. Obviously you start twitter and face book, and once started you need to amp up your activity. You need to relentlessly post. By this I mean every day a couple of times a day. You need to update your website and keep doing it. While you may not be able to outspend your competition on advertising you can out work them on the internet.

I’m looking to start a sex shop in Alabama and although there are sex shops here there is an anti obscenity enforcement act law which basically says sale or distribution of “obscene materials” is a no go. Yet and still there are sex shops here that sell a variety of things….not many but some. Any advice for that?
I also know that this will vary based on a slew of different factors but what’s the average profit of a sex shop?
Thank you 馃檪
Site Administrator says
This sort of thing happens in all parts of the world basiccally many of the shops are just pushing boundaries and betting that it is to much of a hassle for the cops to bother charging them, I would say many are just taking a chance. While I dont know the laws of alabama I have travelled to many stores around the world and have noticed ways that people get around the laws (please dont just take my advise see a lawyer) heres what I have noticed
In malaysia they only sex sex toys (not dvds) with no sex on the packaging (I hear that these have been raided)
In QLD they sell dvds even though qld has strict laws (completely against law) even though the law is so outdated
In london they have to buy expensive licenses, so open without
In some states of the us they can sell dvds and some the cant

hi, I am trying to make a whole business based on the simple fact that big girls have sex too. I am a bigger woman and have been into multiple sex shops but all the lingerie is so small I want to open up a shop that has toys lube everything a normal store would have but the lingerie is all plus size. what kind of steps should I take and how do I go about it
John H says
Firstly I think your first step should be to find plus size lingerie , both online and off. Find out what sort of price point, quality. Then find out if you can find wholesalers that you can buy off that will help you make money at least 50%. Then find a wholesaler for some of your favorite sex toys (generally they are not the same). Now I would start a party plan business and website to test the market. We will do and article on this to give you some ideas.
Lisa Strickler says
Deep breath. I recently lost my in -home adult and lingerie business. I wrote 7 business plans, got a lender, worked 20 hours a day for over a year. My marketing and networking was right on track…the problem was no one wants home parties anymore. It’s hard to compete with amazon and walgreens. I have been so sad since Hearts Desires went under. Do you think I have a better chance with a store front? and that would mean a website too. I don’t what to do, I just know that I believe in what I sold and I’m good at selling it…thank you
Lisa
John H says
Dear Lisa, you are correct, party plan is getting harder. I don’t think just a website would do the job, the competition is fierce. Many of the sex shops that we hear about in the US are going gangbusters. They are still competing against Amazon (your main competitor) and doing well. One of the staples of Adult shops (DVDs) is dying off so you really will be competing with sex toys lingerie lubes and lotions. I do think there is still a real need for a well-run adult shop. Here’s the problem cost. To set up a shop and be most successful you need to do 3 things at once Set up shop , set up a website, and run your party plan out of the shop. To make sure your shop is successful you need to put it near night time businesses like cinema’s clubs , pubs. You need to keep your setup cost low, keep the shop small (although some of the most successful shops are really big) and stack it to the bags with the best price stock you can find. Priced mid range.
Then you need to have your website and cash register as one so all your stock can be sold anywhere ($99 to $150 bucks a month). You need really good suppliers as well for the best price and best delivery. Before you even start you need a good accounting package, Xero is good. Once your set up you will need to target both online and offline customers. You can do this by making your website the most informative in your town. Then you offer the best most helpful service on earth so your customers never want to go to amazon. I might add more information to this article. Please let me know if you have any more question. But please remember I won’t be taking the chance you will be. Obviously, it will be good to get advice from people on the ground, accountants , lawyers, check out other sex shops in the Area you will soon know if they are making money and what opportunities there are.

Rachael says
Hi,
Iv been looking into starting a brick and mortar sex shop in my local area. Population about 50,000 with no competition in the area. The closest store being an hour away. I know there is a high chance of success but here I am with this great idea and no knowledge of how to get it off the ground. First of all I have spoken to council and they have no problem with me opening a sex shop although I still need to go through the avenues. So onto the next step, finance… in order to get the funds I need a business plan but in order to write a successful business plan I need to know ballpark what my start up costs will be but no distributor will allow me to view their catalogue without an existing store even though Iv already registered the business and have an A.B.N. I guess I’m just frustrated as I have spoken with so many distributors to no avail and really want to take the next step.. I am based in Australia. what should I do?
Thankyou
John H says
Dear Rachel thank for contacting us wholesalers keep their cost prices real private as well as their mark-ups and recommended retail. The competition is fierce. But to go to the bank you need to know facts so heres something you can take to the bank. for a store of about 40 square meters you can get a good fitout for about 25000 bucks and 40000 worth of stock ($65000). Possibly less if you do some of the work yourself or you know somebody. Then the profit margin and sales volume varies so much across products and categories that you will find it hard to nail down exact figures.
But on average it will work out to be minimum 50%GP so if you get 20 sales a day at average $40 per sale , its 800 dollars which is a gross profit of $400 dollars. Please take these with a grain of salt. But you get the idea. Please get an accountant to look at my figures. Your $65 000 dollar fit out will cost maybe 200 bucks a week to pay off. If you are interested a friend of mine might hook you up with a business plan and spread sheets. they were offering a franchise type set up. Let me know if you are interested and Ill get you a price. It will include a crap load of suppliers as well thanks wayne

Dear Cherry I have an Idea on both. The first is to design your vibe then find a contract manufacturer check out alibaba.com you will find millions of Chinese manufacturers. If you want to do the lot yourself that will be expensive and difficult. For a franchise here’s a tip. Here’s a business that does it thefranchisemaker.com
Get organized. Think through the process of precisely how your business works. …
Hire an attorney. …
Be picky. …
Build and protect your brand. …
Choose the right locations. …
Find a mentor … …

Support your franchisees.

I’m looking to start a sex toy business I I know I would be great at it and I love it!!! But can you tell me where to start I have a name and logo and wholesalers what next please help I live in Cleveland Ohio so I think this could work..
John H says
Firstly you need to find out your local laws in Australia we would go to the local council. So in your case your local government body. Before you do this though I would do a soft recon of your local opposition find out where many of the stores are located, how they are designed and how friendly they are. The type of goods they keep. The reason for the soft recon is because sometimes the government regulation is so vague not even the Authorities know what legal and what’s not. There is a good chance if they are currently operating the local LAW is not concerned with what they sell. Then with your trip to the LOCAL government , you need to take as much information as possible. For example here’s what I could find from Australia

Hi, I am interested in setting up an online sex shop specialising in large dildos. I have found that the wholesaler sale them but here in Australia Adelaide I cannot find any where that sales them and this also includes online stores.. If they are sold then the price is ridiculous.
How do I go about setting up a new web page etc.
John H says
It’s very true prices in Australia seem to be expensive and you may find it cheaper to go overseas direct. While there are some advantages there are also some issues. For instance, freight, GST, Liability, Quality, and recourse. Basically, if they arrive and are rubbish you loose your money as they all have to be paid up front. So that covers the first part of your question the second part is how to start an online store. Well, there are a bazillion ways to set up the web page or online store it depends on your budget and how you want to take payment. If you are simply going to sell a couple of large dildos then you could just do it via PayPal and a static web page (about $299 bucks gets you 1 years hosting you need paypal http://www.wayno.com.au) the alternative is a full shopping cart we recommend http://www.bigcommerce.com) but just to be certain I will do an article next month covering the best ways to set up an online sex shop.

Where I live there is only ONE adult novelty shop to go to. The company has multiple locations but don’t offer much variety and it’s the same thing at every store. I’m thinking of opening one to compete and to give customers more options but including sex furniture. And i’m thinking that since there are some sex furniture that are expensive maybe I can work with financing? Anyways, what do you think about the sex furniture aspect? My target would be couples and enhancing their love life. Thanks.
John H says
Dear Lee I think sex furniture is a good Idea. but you would want traffic and its a real specific customer base. As for financing, the sex furniture manufacturers could give you more of an Idea. Maybe you could do a deal on consignment.

Dear Gina thanks for the comment. I would probably start online because it is quite an expense to outfit a full shop. You can start with an affiliate store http://www.myfreesexstore.com/. Dear Lisa im interetested in opening an adult shop in abuja Nigeria. But i dont know if it is legal here because i have not seen one here and also i dont know the right shop fittings to use in setting up an adult shop. Can u give me some ideas?
John H says
Dear Vanessa thank-you for contacting us. You will find in many countries that nakedness is illegal for instance magazines and dvds. But even some of the most stringent counties have sex shops so to speak. https://www.rt.com/news/252085-sex-shop-muslims-mecca/ . You will need to talk to your local council and get a feel for you local area. If Nigeria is a modest country you would need to focus on lingerie and sex toys. Particularly ones without sex organs pictures on a good example of this is our satisfyer pro vibrator.
Now for layout. Depending of the type of things you are going to sell we always recommend slat-wall. And shelving heres something along the lines of what we recommend http://www.shopforshops.com/mesh-panels-components/
Some Products that aren’t to indecent but are sex shop staples
Lube , lingerie , masks , novelties , various vibrators non sexual in nature

Hi, really want to open online botique sex toy and lingerie store and eventually actuall store. In Australia Queensland – best advise where to start? I know which e comerce platform supplier would use but struggle to think where to find good supplier ? I know couple brands that I like personally and would like to sell. From what I read a lot of “wholesaler ” you find just on google are not so wholesellers at all. Would it be best to approach the brand directly ? Do you need licensing in Australia? How much roughly I would need cash o start ? advice would be highly appreciated
John H says
If you only want to focus on a couple of brands and do these well, you should approach them they will give you their local supplier whom you can then purchase off. In fact this is one way to get a list of good wholesalers in Australia. For instance if you want to sell fleshlights on your website you should go to fleshlight.com and they will put you onto their local distributor. On our website we only tell people about businesses that advertise with us. If your would be interested in an amazing list of wholesalers let us know we can give you a list of about 20 Australian but we have not set a price. Probably cost about $150 bucks for all of the wholesalers in Australia. If we get some interest we will offer a product.

Hi John,

I’m based in NSW and looking into setting up online adult shop under my sole trader ABN, wanting to start off small with a drop shipping company and see how the website goes with traffic, sales etc.
Would you recommend looking at any business insurances, possibly product liability insurance?
Also who would you recommend for drop ship suppliers?
Any help would be appreciated!
John H says
you will need to decide if you are going to drop ship or keep stock let me know if you need more information
Will says
Which has more success. Opening up a brick and mortar store or a website?
John H says
This is a very good question for instance setting up an online store is cheaper but you have more competition and it is harder to get sales. So to set up a fixed store is more expensive you still have to get sales but your only competition for instant sales is your local opposition and government regulation.
But opening a retail store now days also mean you have to compete with online, for instance I went into a brand new store and got chatting to the young sales lady she didn’t know me. We were talking about the newest wevibe and she said they were the cheapest intown at $269 (not true BTW) but online that same vibe was $195.
So if you are good at local marketing have a heap of cash laying around and a good business plan (with not much local opposition) then I would have to say a local store. But you need to bare in mind.
路 Location
路 Expenses
路 Competition (both internet and local)
路 Price point
路 Product Mix (DVDS are dying)
路 Passing traffic
路 Local council / neighbour hood (not next to church)
路 cash flow
It’s eveybody’s dream to be in the Sex Shop business but the days of guaranteed money is now long gone , it is just like opening a novelty store but with toys that actually cause pleasure.

Dear Lady thanks for contacting us what a time to think about going into business. Before you think about a bricks and mortar store you may want to build a bit of a following online. The two stores you mentioned are old, by old I mean before the internet and before cov-19. Today is a new world. First thing I would do in 2020 Is to start a website and share knowledge while learning. Hi I and my sister are about to start an online sex shop in Argentina, we have very little experience, could you recommend any wholesalers in our country? Importation is having a rough time with our new government. Any tips on how to compete with already establish brands? Delivering hours? how to deal with late hours orders?
Thanks for all the information you can give us
John H says
Finding an adult wholesaler or distributor in Argentina will be hard to do. I just did a quick search in Spanish and only found one easy, and they were in Ecuador. This in itself might be the opportunity you are looking for, become a wholesaler for competing with established brands that is a great question. Because the sex market is so crowded, you will be up against some stiff competition (pardon the pun). What I always recommend is start off small learn the ropes first. Get a name, start a website, YouTube channel, Facebook Twitter to start to build your brand, get a following. One of the main things to remember is that you don’t want your business to be hardcore because this reduces your advertising and promotion options. As you build your web presence, you will get more experience and knowledge. You are discovering what sells and how to sell it. For instance, the first sex toy you want is the satisfyer pro. You can start with a review or a video. Have a play with this one http://promovideomaker.co/. You get 14 days, and it’s easy to use. Owning a sex shop and sex toy business is about helping people enjoy sex, the more mainstream your business, the more customers you get. For instance, in Australia, Adultshop.com and exyland.com.au run a mainstream store that works very well. . I will still try to get you a local wholesaler.

I live in mexico and would love to open up a sex shop but dont know who can delivered and where to get the stock
John H says
Because of Mexican customs, we are having trouble finding a wholesaler/distributor in Mexico for the top sex toy brands.
To send to Mexico, many manufactures have to paste some tags on the products packages and carton boxes, fill some papers. Basically, they are the details of products, with the customer can using these to make the customs clearance in Mexico.
Also, if you want to purchase any of the products with Li-battery(USB charging), you have to make certificates at the Mexican customs office.
With each kind of product corresponding to only one certificate,
If you buy 100 kinds of products with USB charging, they have to apply 100 certificates. The certificate is expensive, one certificate is about 300~400 USD( not sure), and the application time is three months.
It may be best to import yourself, but you will need to consult with the Mexican customs office first.

Exporting sex toys to South America requires a thorough understanding of the local regulations and restrictions around importing and selling such products. It is essential to conduct research on the government regulations, laws and taxes associated with the importation of these items. Additionally, it is important to assess the potential customer base in the region, as well as the competitive landscape. Once these considerations have been addressed, the next step is to determine the most effective and cost-efficient supply chain for exporting the products. This includes researching potential shipping options, securing the necessary export permits and certifications, and negotiating rates with freight forwarders and carriers. Finally, it is important to ensure proper labeling and product safety standards in order to ensure compliance with local regulations.

Doing research on the regulations of your specific country and/or state, as well as the laws and regulations of the countries from which you will purchase the products, is essential. Additionally, setting up a secure and reliable payment system, as well as a privacy policy, will be key factors in having a successful online sex toy shop.
